What CMS works with BrightSign®?
BrightSign® makes the player, not the platform, and deliberately leaves the software to you. Here are the routes actually available, what each one assumes about your organisation, and the six questions worth asking before you commit an estate.
BrightSign® players are CMS-agnostic: the hardware does not pick your software. You have three broad routes: BrightSign®'s own tooling (BrightAuthor:connected with BSN.cloud), one of its many third-party partner CMS products, or a self-hosted CMS such as Xibo® driven by an independent player.
That freedom is the whole point of the platform, and it's also why the decision is confusing: the hardware vendor won't make it for you.
Our stake, up front: we build XiPlay, which is one of the options below (the Xibo® route). We've tried to write this so it's useful even if you pick something else, since the six questions in particular are the ones we'd ask of any vendor, including us. Where we're biased, we say so.
Three ways to drive a BrightSign® player
BrightSign®'s own tooling
BrightSign® publishes its own authoring and management software (BrightAuthor:connected, with BSN.cloud for fleet management). It's the most direct path: one vendor for hardware and software.
- Suits
- Teams who want a single supplier, are happy with the feature set as shipped, and don't already run a CMS.
- Ask yourself
- Does its scheduling and content model cover what you need long-term, and are you comfortable with your content platform and your hardware being the same vendor?
A partner / third-party CMS
BrightSign® is deliberately CMS-agnostic and has a large ecosystem of software partners. Many commercial signage CMS products can drive BrightSign® players, typically as a hosted subscription.
- Suits
- Teams buying a CMS and hardware together, who want a managed cloud product and vendor support in one contract.
- Ask yourself
- Where does your content live, who can access it, and what happens to your screens if you stop paying? Ask about export, and about whether the player keeps playing when the cloud is unreachable.
Self-hosted Xibo® + XiPlay
This is oursXibo® is a widely used signage CMS you host yourself (or have hosted). Xibo Signage Ltd. does not publish a BrightSign® player, so XiPlay is an independent one, so BrightSign® hardware joins your Xibo® CMS as a normal display over XMDS.
- Suits
- Teams who already run Xibo®, or who want their content and scheduling to stay on infrastructure they control, including networks with no internet at all.
- Ask yourself
- Are you willing to run (or have someone run) the CMS? In exchange you keep your content in-house and your screens keep working independently of any vendor's cloud.
Six questions to ask any signage vendor
Feature lists all look the same at the shortlist stage. These are the questions whose answers actually differ, and that you'll wish you'd asked two years in.
- 1
What happens when the network drops?
This is the question that separates signage software in practice. Ask whether the player keeps playing cached content through an outage, or whether it streams and goes black. A screen showing nothing is worse than a screen showing yesterday's content.
- 2
Where does my content actually live?
On your infrastructure, or the vendor's? This determines your exposure if you switch vendors, and whether restricted or air-gapped sites are even possible.
- 3
What happens if the vendor disappears?
Ask what a screen does when the vendor's cloud is unreachable, permanently. Any answer other than 'it keeps playing' is a business-continuity risk you're taking on.
- 4
How is licensing counted, and can it move?
Per screen, per player, per site? And when a unit is RMA'd or a store is refitted, can the license move to the replacement hardware without a new purchase?
- 5
Which BrightSign® capabilities does it actually expose?
Genlock video walls and HDMI-In are hardware features of specific BrightSign® models. Software has to support them for you to use them, so don't assume buying an XT gets you a synced wall.
- 6
Can it run with no internet at all?
Not just 'offline-tolerant', but genuinely air-gapped. Government and secure sites need licensing that never phones home, which most cloud-first products cannot do by design.
How XiPlay answers those six
| Network drops | Content is cached on the player; the refresh pauses, the screen never does. Offline signage |
| Where content lives | Your own Xibo® CMS. It never passes through our servers. Security |
| If we disappear | Screens keep playing; issued offline licenses stay valid for their full term with no callback. |
| Licensing | One license per player, keyed to its MAC, movable to replacement hardware from the portal. |
| BrightSign® capabilities | Genlock walls, HDMI-In, 4K and interactivity: all included, no feature tiers. Model guide |
| Air-gapped | Yes: a signed offline license file, verified on-device, no phone-home. Air-gapped signage |
CMS-for-BrightSign® questions
What CMS works with BrightSign® players?
BrightSign® is deliberately CMS-agnostic: the hardware doesn't force a software choice. Broadly there are three routes: BrightSign®'s own tooling (BrightAuthor:connected / BSN.cloud), one of the many third-party partner CMS products, or a self-hosted CMS such as Xibo® paired with an independent player like XiPlay.
Does BrightSign® require BSN.cloud?
No. BSN.cloud is BrightSign®'s own fleet/content service, but the players are not locked to it, which is precisely why a partner ecosystem exists and why independent players like XiPlay can drive the hardware.
Can I use Xibo® CMS with BrightSign®?
Yes, with an independent player. Xibo Signage Ltd. publishes players for Windows, Android, Linux, webOS and Tizen, but not BrightSign®. XiPlay fills that gap: it implements Xibo®'s XMDS protocol (v3 and v4), so a BrightSign® player appears in your Xibo® CMS as a normal display.
Which is cheapest?
It depends on how each vendor counts: per screen, per player, per feature tier, or bundled with hardware. Compare total cost per screen per year, and check whether the capabilities you need (video walls, HDMI-In, interactivity) are included or sit behind an upgrade. XiPlay's own answer is one price per device with no feature tiers, and the 2-year plan is the best value. See Pricing for current rates.
Do I have to pick now?
No, and you shouldn't. A BrightSign® player is a card away from a different software stack. Prepare a card, run one screen for a fortnight on each shortlisted option, and let the failure modes show themselves before you commit an estate.
